To be glorified here on the mountain, and to talk about his coming suffering in Jerusalem may have given the Lord Jesus strength for his days ahead strength facing this unimaginable human suffering. Stephen is stoned, lies down and falls asleep. Once again, Luke tells us about Jesus praying. Jesus went up the mountain to pray (9:29), perhaps to commune with God concerning his destiny. While it has been common to think of them as representing the law and the prophets, which is not to be discounted, there may be more important things about them in this story. 1-6. And it speaks to us what Christ did a few months later in his death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. If Peter, James, and John had any doubts before as to who Jesus was, seeing Jesus lit up like the blazing sun, seeing the long-dead Moses and Elijah alive before them, and now hearing a voice from heaven, surely they had no doubts now. God is not our Cosmic Buddy to whom we give the Bro handshake and hug. There is something so glorious about God and his kingdom that we will melt when confronted with it. Does your face glow with the light of Christ? Yes, the disciples themselves will suffer as they follow Jesus and proclaim him to the world. It lit up like a blazing light. I am come unto Mine own and Mine own receive Me not; I am become a stranger unto My brethren, an alien to My mother's children: Consider Mine enemies, for they are many, and they hate Me with cruel hatred. Either expression, as Stephen Farris points out in The Lectionary Commentary, could be the loose equivalent of saying about a week later. Yet, as Farris also suggests, in Lukes context the eighth day could be a prefigurement of the resurrection as well. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!. Moses and Elijah? Biblical writers, attempting to describe Gods glory using human words, portrayed it as like devouring fire (Exodus 24:17). So it is possible that this little detail on the timing of the Transfiguration could be a hint pointing toward Easter and the glory that awaited Jesus also then. A week ago, I was reading in 1 Corinthians 15 in my daily morning reading. We dont die and then simply vanish. In any case, its clear from the Gospel accounts by Matthew, Mark, and Luke that the disciples were terrified at what was happening. Mountaintop experiences are important, but theyre not meant to last forever. And just like that, it was over. How many broken hearts and broken lives could be avoided if we would just listen to him! The first step to such a prayer is stillness and silence, or what should have been Peters response on the mountain. There are many people who regret not listening to Jesus. Indeed, by their very demeanor and words, they are actually tugging Jesus another direction! Ive read this many times and wondered, Why did this happen? What was the purpose? Why Moses and Elijah? And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. Jesus words echo Moses reproach of Israel, and provide one more link between Moses and Jesus (Deuteronomy 32:5see also Numbers 14:27; Isaiah 65:2). If that is our view, we are badly, badly mistaken. Do you know one who is sorry for having listened? Having both of them appear on the Mount of Transfiguration seems to be a neat way of coalescing the whole Old Testament into Jesus ministry. 2. This is my Son, my Chosen One. Biblical Commentary Elijah fled to Mount Horeb, and there God spoke to him in a sound of sheer silence (1 Kings 19:12, NRSV; RSV: a still small voice). The way Luke frames it, the whole dazzling event ends up being kind of sweet in its own way, as though the Fathersensing the apprehension of the Sonsent down some reinforcements to buck him up and help him make it across the finish line. The two festivals complement each other in striking ways. Moses had prophesied, Your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. Our confidence in Christ is strengthened by this testimony. Luke says they were afraid when the cloud came upon them (Luke 9:34). Its something I think about only if Im watching a sci-fi movie. All of this provides important background, for Luke himself says that the transfiguration took place after these sayings., Some of the major features of Lukes account, over against Marks, are the following. What were Peter, John, and James thinking about this stunning scene before them? Commentators have long pointed out that Moses represented the Sinai Covenant/Law (as well as the Exodus) and that Elijah represented the prophetic voice of the Old Testament as well as Gods covenant faithfulness in sending servants to continue speaking to and ministering to even a wayward Israel. The prophecy of the Old Testament is realized in the presence of Moses and Elijah. Between Jesus birth and his death, this may be the most significant event in the Gospels. However, these words are directed to the disciples rather than Jesus (as at the baptism). All his teachings about love for God and for our fellow human beings are to be observed. The Feast of Booths was observed in the fall each year at the completion of the harvest. Later, at Jesus ascension, a cloud will take Jesus out of their sight (Acts 1:9also written by Luke). But its a whole other experience to have that same bolt of lightning strike the tree in your backyard when youre standing in the window 30 feet away. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. and those who turn many to righteousness Mark 14:33 and Matt 26:37 tell us that they will also be present at Gethsemane. Consider the wider context of Luke here. Why go through all this razzle-dazzle, bright-as-lightning stuff if the whole incident ends up being more about ears than eyes? Though its hard for us to grasp what happened here when Moses and Elijah appeared, to see them would have been sort of a pledge to the disciples of their own immortality. Accounts of Moses as having gone to heaven are not in the Old Testament itself, but in Jewish tradition (Josephus, Ant, 4.326). Mark, the shortest Gospel, gives the most complete account of this exorcism. So we may speculate a bit about why these two men appeared. The father has sought help from Jesus disciples (v. 40), and has surely availed himself of other potential remedies as well. This event was unprecedented. The Bible has a more remarkable story of a metamorphosis. To have Jesus entire body and clothing lit up like the sun, and to see two ancient biblical heroes appearing out of the past.well, whats the only response but amazement and fear? Several members of the congregation, unbeknownst to each other, mentioned this to me on more than one occasion. The Jewish people expect Moses and Elijah to return to usher in the messianic era. Yet in the Bible events like these sometimes play out rather differently than we think. But other times he swings at the pitch, completely whiffs, and strikes out. That Jesus did indeed go on to suffer and die is testament to his true divinity. They were dumbfounded, speechless, awe struck. As one prepares to preach on this text, it is important to bear in mind that the Transfiguration of Our Lord is a Christological festival, not so much an occasion for moralism (that we all have mountain top experiences, but must come down). Peter wanted to build three booths, but Jesus said no. It is possible to structure a sermon in such a way that it brings the hearer upon the scene, looking around at the various persons present. Listen to him! (v. 35). The disciples have survived their encounter with God! Now, were tempted simply to think of this as a Kodak moment, one youd like to hold on to, that Peter was simply trying to concretize the experience and preserve it for all time. Jesus prayed to God, and as he prayed, his appearance was changed, his raiment became dazzling white. And then he was joined by none other than Moses and Elijah representing, of course, the Law and the Prophets of the Jewish faith. In the Bible, when a story takes us up to a His face was altered. And while this looks a little one-dimensional compared to the computer-generated graphics were so accustomed to, its meant to represent their holiness. Yet as Matt spoke of last week, he not only was 100% divine, he was 100% human with the frailties of humanity. Talk to someone you trust about this. But it also reminds us that the way to Easter is through the cross. In the Bible, mountains are synonymous with the majesty and dominion of God. Spark Inspiration: He was not making up stories about Christ. What we are about to read is an unusual story. Luke clearly understands Jesus to be a new Moses. Its not easy to do. Exodus 34:29-35. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. And because his emphasis is upon the humanity of Jesus, and one of the greatest needs Transfiguration of Jesus in Luke 9:28-36 The Trinity can be a difficult concept for anyone to grasp, but it is especially tough for youngsters who tend to be quite literal-minded. His constant praying shows his love for his Father in heavenand his confidence that his prayers and his worship were heard. While he was praying, Jesus was transformed before the disciples eyes. Perhaps an analogy to explain this is that to see a bolt of lightning strike the earth a mile away and to hear the rumbling thunder is one experience. The apostle Paul notes that all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), but then says, We were buried therefore with him through baptism to death, that just like Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). As such the booths also symbolize a time of rest, which could be interpreted allegorically as the messianic rest. 1. It would be too much for us. They will fail to heal a boy with a demon (9:37-43). They said it was as if a ring of light encircled her face. Herod said, John I beheaded, but who is this, about whom I hear such things? He sought to see him (vv. This moment on the mountain with Jesus, Moses and Elijah tells us that yes, there truly is life beyond the grave. that he took with him Peter, John, and James, Jesus answers that in the next verse.
